De Amsterdammers waren 'heldhaftig, vastberaden en barmhartig'. Toch werden bijna alle Amsterdamse Joden vermoord. The black one is thinner and has three white Xs on it.

Such a flag was given in 1947 by Queen Wilhelmina on occasion of the addition of the motto to the coat-of-arms 28 May 1947. This motto Heldhaftig, Vastberaden, Barmhartig ("Heroic, Determined, Merciful") was given to the city for the merit during 1940-1945. This flag is used during WWII-commemorations.

Wednesday, February 17, 2016 Heldhaftig, Vastberaden, Barmhartig What a pleasure this last week and a half in Amsterdam has been, and how sad that my time here and my entire mission are ending. Here are my last thoughts and reflections as well as a summary of my brief time here in this fabulous city.

After the World War II, in recognition of the heroism of people of Amsterdam, Queen Wilhelmina who led from England the Resistance of the Netherlands against the Nazi occupation, added under the Amsterdam coat of arms three words: "Heldhaftig, Vastberaden, Barmhartig" ("Heroic, Determined, Compassionate"). Queen Wilhelmina wanted to remember the role of the citizens of Amsterdam during World War II and created a motto consisting of the Dutch words "Heldhaftig, Vastberaden, Barmhartig", meaning "Valiant, Steadfast, Compassionate".

More recent versions of the crest bear the Dutch words "Heldhaftig, Vastberaden, Barmhartig" which means "Heroic, Steadfast, Compassionate". These were added in 1947 at the request of Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands to mark the people's protest against the Nazi persecution of the Amsterdam's Jews during the war.
